NASH FOM JOE

The family of Late Mr & Mrs Kenneth Iwachukwu was a peaceful, glorious and the happiest family. The whole tragedy started when my dad took ill (stroke). We could barely eat because my mum who became the bread winner. Later, my dad died (10th March, 2006). It was a great loss to the family. My dad’s brothers came accusing my mum of killing my father. They tried to force her to cut her hair and do all their customs but she refused and that increased their hatred for her.

My uncles sold all the plots of land my father had, leaving just one family compound, which is still under dispute. At my dad’s burial, a fight came up between my dad’s brothers and us (my mum and four of us). My mum tried her best and took us to safety. After the burial of my dad, my mum took us to bonny island. Later, she got a job at the Bonny local Government Council. Life became a bit fair to us all.

After some years, my mum developed some health challenge and later died on the 9th of November, 2011. This was another shock that rocked the family. My elder sister felt like killing herself because she didn’t know how to feed and care for the family since there was no help from anybody. My mum’s brothers started disturbing and maltreating us. They planned to through us out of the house. Each day that passed by was full of tears. Every night we would gather and pray and cry to God for help.

Later on, one of our cousins contacted us on hearing the death of our mum. We planned and escaped from bonny because of the harsh treatment from my mum’s brothers. We came to Port Harcourt (Diobu Mile 3) with our cousin. The load was heavy on him and we later relocated to Oyibo because he was not that buoyant financially. I hawked with my junior sister at Oyigbo Market in order to survive

In the midst of these, I felt heartbroken because I was just 9 years old when my dad died. I still had hope and looked up to God. My Mum encouraged me not to give up that with God, she will help each of us attain our dreams, but when she died, Oh God! It was as if my world had collapsed. I wanted to be a mechanical engineer (automobile) and I wanted to study abroad because of my course. Now the only person who promised to see me through life struggle is no more. I felt broken because I had a dream to liberate my family from this poverty and see my junior sister through her education. I feel unhappy because I can’t see to my sister’s wellbeing.

However, I thank God who has located me through Sam Amaga Foundation. Today, I am a graduate of Geology from one of the prestigous Universities in Nigeria.
